Latin Alternative Music Conference 2018

I had the privilege of being at the LAMC this year thanks to my friend Ivonne! The event is a weeklong series of events focused on more of the indie/alternative artists of the latin music industry.

I volunteered on Thursday and Friday at the conference portion of the week working with a team from Industria Works, which Billboard describes as “alternative platform for artist development.” Essentially, they do a lot of things besides hosting this conference every year. They were a great team to work for, a humble and caring group of people. Notable moment: one of my supervisors went out of her way to introduce me to Tomasa Del Real, who I was gushing about in my last post!!! The whole team were great to work with.

There were spontaneous performances that would pop-up in the conference hall way, and I thought this was a lovely aspect of the event. Artists would just set up and give us the opportunity to listen live to their music. This kind of grassroots and independent artist focus was present throughout.

I also had the beautiful happen-chance of re-connecting with one of my friends from high school who was a fellow vocal major. Below is a photo of Jenn and I; it is something that it's been our passion for music that brought our paths to cross again! I'm grateful to know so many bad ass women in music.

I had the opportunity to sit in on a few panels, one of which was "Women Changing the Face of the Latin Music Industry," which primarily was a conversation about how we continue to get more women in the many different parts of the music world. This was a conversation many in the room were passionate about. Additionally, the conversations had in panels or in the hallways by the vendors we're all full of this unique sense of hope in making great, authentic music. Inspiring to say the least.

In the world of streaming we have a promising democratized state of music. That being said, support your local music makers, support POC, support women!
