They have many recurring music night jams, such as District of Raga (DC's monthly Indian classical jam) and Mashriq Maghrib Music Jam Session with Huda Asfour, both run by WOC! As well, you find salsa classes and other acts.
My recent visit was for the monthly Mashri Maghrib Music Jam Session, I grabbed dinner with my friend and we were off. My friend had her own cultural ties to the music being performed so I took her lead on the evening, and so we sat in the circle. We watched as they changed between acts, my friend would share tidbits throughout the night such as, "This is a very old traditional song" and other insights. It was a magical evening to be surrounded by singing voices in community, to just see performer after performer go up and share their heart through music in this intimate setting.
Here's a painfully grainy Snapchat video:
(Better quality vids and graphics to come, I promise!)
The venue is colorfully decorated and the food and drinks are good too, which just adds to the quality of the experience. You can find their website online and more info here: http://bossadc.com/ It's honestly one of my absolutely favorite places to have found in D.C.
Do you have a place to find the music of different cultures in your part of the world? Please let me know in the comments below!
